Which vehicles can be driven using an IDP?

An IDP is a translation of your valid driver's license. You can only drive vehicles using an IDP based on your valid driver's license credentials and privileges.

We issue the Standard 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic IDP format. This 1949 Geneva Convention IDP has the following vehicle categories:

  1. Motorcycles and Scooters. Motorcycles, with or without a sidecar, invalid carriages and three-wheeled motor vehicles with an unloaded weight not exceeding 400 kg (900 lbs)

  2. Passenger Cars or Light Motor Vehicles. Motor vehicles used for the transport of passengers and comprising, in addition to the driver's seat, at most eight seats, or those used for the transport of goods and having permissible maximum weight not exceeding 3,500 kg (7,700 lbs.). Vehicles in this category may be coupled with a light trailer.

  3. Goods Transport Vehicles or Heavy Motor Vehicles. Motor vehicles used for the transport of goods and of which the permissible maximum weight exceeds 3,500 kg (7,700 lbs.). Vehicles in this category may be coupled with light trailer.

  4. Busses and Coasters. Motor vehicles used for the transport of passengers and comprising, in addition to the driver's seat, more than eight seats. Vehicles in this category may be coupled with a light trailer.

  5. Cars with Heavy Trailers. Motor vehicles of categories B, C, or D, as authorized above, with other than a light trailer.
